Well, this is sure to be a riveting one. Orange Is the New Black star and hero in the fight against transgender stigmatization, Laverne Cox is going to be publishing a memoir. Which is not only amazing because it furthers her cause in the crusade against bigotry and further mainstream acceptance of transgendered people, but also because it’s sure to be an incredible, captivating, and inspiring read.
In a press release from the book’s soon-to-be-publisher, Harlequin, details on the 2015 release were revealed. It will chronicle her journey from young, misunderstood child to actress, advocate, and an empowered force to be reckoned with in Hollywood. Details will focus on her adolescent struggle toward self-discovery and self-actualization despite a childhood steeped in cycles of familial abuse — something to which, no doubt, many youths in the LGBTQ community can relate.
Bringing awareness to the discrimination she faced prior to her success is not only a noble pursuit, it’s a necessity to gain further traction and breed the widespread acceptance the community needs. Especially when ignorant comments like Fox News commentator Dr. Keith Ablow’s are still largely the norm.
“As a trans woman of color from a working class background, I have often felt shame about the truth of my personal story for much of my life,” explained Cox. “By sharing my full, unvarnished story, including details of my life and family history I have never before revealed, I hope to provide a voice and safe place for those who have suffered because of their race, class, gender, abuse, violence and trauma. I’m thrilled that Harlequin will be publishing this book.”
It’s a brave and soul-baring endeavor — and we already can’t wait to get our hands on it.
According to the press release, the book’s message will reach far beyond the confines of the LGBTQ community, as self-discovery is one of the more universal aspects of growing up. As editor Rebecca Hunt put it: “Laverne Cox is a powerful, accomplished actress and a beacon of hope to countless people of all ages around the world. The story of her life to this point is nothing short of an inspiration.”
