‘Godzilla’ Movie Reboot Getting a Prequel Tie-In Comic Book

Hollywood loves a lucrative cross-platform intellectual property (IP) more than ever, and if the upcoming Godzilla movie reboot is a success than you best believe that additional tie-ins will be produced. The grandaddy of Japanese Kaiju (read: giant monsters) has already spent 60 years being portrayed onscreen alongside his monstrous brethren, in addition to having inspired numerous video games, TV shows, comic books and more related merchandise than you can shake a stick at.

Godzilla (2014) director Gareth Edwards (Monsters) has announced a tie-in comic book prequel to his sci-fi/horror blockbuster (see the above video), which shall be released just over a week before his film stomps its way into theaters. The 72-page long graphic novel is titled Godzilla: Awakening and was penned by Greg and Max Borenstein (the latter is also the primary screenwriter for Edwards’ movie).

Here is the official description for Godzilla: Awakening:

Delve into an incredible mystery, generations in the making. At the dawn of the atomic age, humanity awakens lifeforms beyond imagination, unleashing monumental forces of nature. This explosive, larger-than-life adventure is the perfect way for fans to experience the new Godzilla before seeing it in theaters.

The bit in the Awakening synopsis about humanity awakening multiple creatures “beyond imagination” is worth noting, since Edwards’ Godzilla movie will apparently include more than one Kaiju – something teased in the original conceptual trailer that premiered at the International Comic-Con in 2012, but was left out for the official teaser trailer.

Variety is reporting that Awakening takes place several decades before the film reboot, so chances are that the comic will shed light on where these all these mysterious beasts (including, but not restricted to, Godzilla) came from before they show up onscreen. Edwards has also spoken before about wanting to make a Destroy All Monsters-style followup to his Godzilla movie, so the prequel comic would also be a golden opportunity to start laying out the proper backstory for such a monster-centric sequel (hint, hint).

The Godzilla cast includes Aaron-Taylor Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen (Avengers: Age of Ultron), along with Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine), Ken Watanabe (Inception), Juliette Binoche (Cosmopolis) and David Strathairn (Lincoln).

The Godzilla: Awakening comic book will be released on May 7th, 2014, nine days before the Godzilla movie reboot hits theaters.
