"The Legend of the Candy Cane" has been yanked from Florida school bookshelves after parents complained about religion and race being brought into the classroom.
Parents of first-grade kids at DeBary Elementary School in Volusia County said the tale — which tells the story of Jesus through the sweet treat — was "inappropriate."
They pointed to a particular passage to highlight their point.
It reads: "White is for Jesus because he's white and red is for Jesus' blood, and if you flip the candy cane upside down it makes a J for Jesus."
Horace Hymes, whose 7-year-old daughter Erin attends the school, told WESH 2 News he was "upset teachers are using religious books in the classroom."
Volusia County School District spokeswoman Nancy Wait admitted to the station that the book should "probably not" have been used in the classroom.
But she insisted that the teachers "did not reference race in any shape of form" and added, "It was meant to be used as a resource, not to teach religion."
The book has since been pulled from classrooms.
