Bits of Book News

Writing about writing: The folks over at Flavorwire have compiled a list of the greatest essays ever written about writing. The list shows samples essays by the likes of Kurt Vonnegut, George Orwell and Robert Frost, who wrote "No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader. No surprise for the writer, no surprise for the reader."

Best YA fiction: Mashable has put together a list of 11 best young adult books of the year. Among the picks are Rapture Practice by Aaron Hartzler, Sex and Violence by Carrie Mesrobian and Forgive Me Leonard Peacock by Matthew Quick.

Anarchy in the U.S.: William Powell, the author of The Anarchist Cookbook, a 1971 how-to guide of mass murder, is requesting that the book go out of print. Since its publication, the book has been linked to a series of killers, such as the Columbine High School shooters of 1999. Most recently, Karl Piersson, a Colorado teen who opened fire at his high school before killing himself on Dec. 13, had been a fan of the book, reading it and sharing its message with his peers. The book has sold 2 million copies since its publication, and is still available from retailers including Barnes & Noble and Amazon.

Hot iBooks: Apple's iBooks store has put out its ist of its top five best-selling reads of the year. The Divergent trilogy by Veronica Roth grabbed three spots, while John Grisham's Sycamore Row and Suzanne Collins' Mockingjay battled for the other two spots.

Colbert vs. Cruz: Senator Ted Cruz is the subject of a new coloring book called U.S. Senator Ted Cruz to the Future. Naturally, funnyman Stephen Colbert decided to tease Cruz mercilessly on his show, The Colbert Report. He mocks the book (currently the No. 1 children's coloring book on Amazon) for, among other things, its self-declaration as a "fair and objective review on this…real-life superhero."
