ARCHIE COMICS DONATES $1 MILLION WORTH OF BOOKS TO TOYS FOR TOTS

(note: this is from December 11, however I thought it was such a great piece of news I wanted to share it. If you already read it somewhere else, that is great. If you are just reading it, I hope you feel the way I felt. You see, this is why I love comic books!)

Official Press Release

In an unprecedented initiative for a comic book publisher, Archie Comics, the home of Archie, Betty, Veronica, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Josie and the Pussycats, and many more, has donated over one million dollars worth of children's books to the Toys For Tots program, as reported by USA TODAY. The not-for-profit charity organization is dedicated to providing less fortunate children with toys for Christmas. Archie Comics is proud to be part of this mission.

"We couldn't think of a worthier or better charity to donate our books to than Toys For Tots," said Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater. "We are extremely proud to encourage children to discover reading who may not have the opportunity and hopefully enrich their lives through our characters."

Archie Comics wants to encourage its fans to join in with a new initiative called "Archie's Give-a-Book Program," to spread the gift of giving to children. Making books available to every child to encourage creativity and literacy is an important mission to Archie Comics.

In addition, the teen residents from the comics' hometown of Riverdale will be getting in on the fun in a new story entitled, "Holiday Heroes," where Archie, Betty, Veronica and the rest pitch in their efforts to the Toys For Tots foundation. The special story is featured in Archie Double Digest #246, available now where Archie Comics are sold.

"Our nation's less fortunate children deserve the resources to learn and experience the joy of reading," said retired Marine Major Bill Grein, vice president of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. "The Toys for Tots Literacy Program provides the gift of reading, which can leave a lasting impact on a child even after the holidays are over. Thanks to Archie Comics we are able to reach thousands of additional children who might otherwise be overlooked this Christmas season."

Archie Comics is gladly giving back to the children who have made Archie a household name for over 70 years with the help of its distribution partner Random House, who generously offered its services towards delivering the gifts to this worthy charity. President of Random House Publisher Services Jeff Abraham stated "Random House Publisher Services and our distribution and fulfillment teams are proud to participate and contribute to this wonderful holiday outreach from Archie Comics."
