Most of you know my story. I was an avid reader from the age of 3. Then I became ill in 1999 and was not able to read for 14 years. I just started reading again back in June. I started with someone familiar to me, a book my mom gave me to try again to see if I could read. And that familiar person was Steven King. The book I read was Joyland. And that opened up the floodgates.
I found out all about e-books, book clubs on line, book sites, discount bookstores on line, new genres, virtual book tours, talking to authors, etc. It was very overwhelming. But oh so exciting!
I remember having a friend bring me over to join goodreads.ccm. I joined in the middle of September of this year. I remember there being a box at the bottom where you can set your reading challenge for a year. At first I was not going to because I felt silly seeing as that the year was almost over. But then I thought it would be good to have a goal. Although I read Joyland in less than a week. I was not sure if a lot of reading would bring on any migraines, or if I would have an MS flare up, so I figured on one book a week, no pressure, which made my goal 15 books. But then, because I know I read fast, I added 5 more on for a total of 20 books. I remember wondering if I could do it. Well I hit my goal probably in the first week of October. So I upped the number of books again to 25 books. Then I upped it to 30. Then I upped it to 35 and it was still October. So I just left it. And I thought I might have to be worried about my 2014 goal of 100 books. So, with making no more additions to the amount I wanted to read, I have read 49 books to date. I was shocked to see that today.
So being totally honest, I would love to read horror and humor most of the time. But because everything was so new, when I went to Barnes & Noble I picked books that just caught m eye. I did have a list but, and I believe this was the work of a higher power, the books I chose were only available on Nook. I could have brought three horror books that day but for some reason did not want to. And when I ordered 11 books from Amazon (before I started winning books from goodreads and booklikes), I also picked different genres.
So I decided to go over the books I have read and reviewed on my blog (which will only be 26 I am not sure why. I have to see if I have reviews on goodreads which are not posted to my blog...actually I can think of one right now. Or it is possible I read the book before I was on goodreads and never did a review which I discovered yesterday was the case of May We Be Forgiven.
As I sit and look at the piles of book I have won from goodreads, as well as one or two books sent by authors, and one or two won from other contests, I see a lot of different genres. Not to mention all my Kindle books, which have many different genres too (but a little heavy on the horror). But what I wanted to see is how diverse my reading is. I have new favorite genres that I did not think I would ever read. I am happy to say that. So below is what I was able to come up with based on my reviews of what genres I have read. What I plan to do is finish my books and commitments I have made, and then pick up a sports book I have. Which I am very interested in reading. I just am not fanatic about it. I do not have to urgently read it is what I mean. So of course I have chosen other books over it. But as I have mentioned too many times, this is an all genre blog so I want to bring you a great reading experience too. If there is a genre below I have not listed, please comment so I can see if I have a book here that is in that genre. If not I will find a book in that genre to review for you!
Genres of books I have read in 2013:
Horror
Travel
Biography
Non Fiction
Humor
Autobiography
Christian
Romance
Childrens
Short Stories
Science Fiction
Post Apocalyptic
Young Adult
Fantasy
Dystopian
Contemporary
LGBT
Chick-lit
Holiday
Graphic Novel
Memoir
Splatterpunk
So that is not to bad. A very diverse list of genres. The last one, Splatterpunk, I just realized I did not review the book here on my blog. So I see where my 49 to 26 book gaps are. But I think books that are missing are in the list of genres above. Nothing jumps out at me of being in a new category.
I hope to add to this list. As I mentioned I have a spots book I want to read, as well as a self-help book, a political book, etc. So I have even more to learn about what book genres I like and those which I do not like (which is really close to nothing)
Again, I ask you for comments, and as always, book suggestions. You can even go over to my goodreads account here: My goodreads prolife and friend me. Just mention you read my blog and my post.
I hope that gives you a little insight into my reading habits and I hope you always remember how many different types of books there are out there, and it is okay to have your favorite genre. But why not take a chance on a new genre? I always say every book has something to teach you. Who knows, you may be daring one day and pick a book from a genre you never thought you would and you may have a great idea. Or something in the book may cause you to think about something in your life, or life in general. I hope no matter what you do, you always keep reading!
