KOLKATA: As the nation bid final adieu to Apartheid icon Nelson Mandela, a Social Science book followed by students of Class III of the Assembly of God Church School says that the revolutionary leader passed away more than a decade ago.
The textbook puts the year of Mandela's death as 1999. The book says that the former South African leader died in the last year of his term as the country's President. The information is found in a chapter titled 'Achievers', which talks about various notable individuals across the globe.
"We have not yet reached that part of the book in our syllabus and so the children have not been misinformed in any way. The teachers will definitely go through the entire chapter before it is taught in class and the necessary corrections will be made before the students read it," said principal Victor Singh.
He maintained that the publishers should be held responsible for the fault and the school will let them know of the error at the earliest.
According to him, the book is a product of Prachi Publications, a Delhi-based publishing house. "I will go through the book to ensure that students are not affected in any way," Singh added.
Sources stated that such errors sometimes creep into books inadvertently. In almost every case, publishers are prompt in rectifying the mistake once it is brought to their notice. But if a publication house continuously makes such mistakes in its books, their services are discontinued by educational institutions concerned. Guidelines require textbooks to be reviewed by teachers before use.
