When it comes to rock ‘n’ roll memoirs that Flavorwire is looking forward to, erstwhile Sleater-Kinney rock goddess and current Portlandia jokester Carrie Brownstein is at the top of our list (er, behind Courtney Love’s memoirs, which may come out someday and may be epic when they do).
She hasn’t revealed much about her Riverhead Books-releated project, besides an interview with Stereogum where she called the process of writing a memoir “daunting”: “… everything that’s grandiose and colorful in your memory becomes these little shacks on the page and you have to build the scaffolding with every sentence and paragraph.”
In a recent Rolling Stone interview, she goes into a little more detail on what we can expect from her book (Sleater-Kinney stories! Rock drama! Hooray!):
She has done extensive research for the book, interviewing family members and former bandmates to corroborate her memories. The chapters that longtime fans will be most interested in, naturally, have to do with Sleater-Kinney. Brownstein has found she’s inclined to blame herself most of all for the tensions that killed the group. “I feel a lot more culpable than I ever thought I would,” she says. “My anxiety was getting bigger than the band. For Corin, it was kind of like, ‘Well, this isn’t fun anymore, because we have this crazy person in the band.’ Meaning me.”
