Der-ek Je-ter.

That sing-song callout familiar to New York Yankees fans is resounding at stadiums around the country this spring as the veteran shortstop plays his final season in pinstripes.

Now Jeter is stepping up to the plate with his next act, as author and publisher.

The first book from Jeter Publishing, The Contract, a novel for middle school readers ages 8-12, will arrive on Sept. 23, Simon & Schuster announced.

We have

an exclusive look at the jacket and details about the book.

Written by Jeter with Paul Mantell, The Contract is inspired by Jeter's life, but many of the events are fictionalized.

Young Derek dreams of being shortstop for the Yankees. When he joins the Little League Tigers, though, he starts at second base, still hoping for the shortstop spot. "To make sure he stays focused on school, too, his parents make him a contract — keep up the grades or no baseball," says a news release.

Simon & Schuster announced it would partner with the famed shortstop last November. Jeter's imprint will publish adult non-fiction titles, children's picture books, middle grade fiction, and ready-to-read children's books.
