Today we have Paige Rion with us for a guest post. I met Paige first when I did a book blitz for one of her books. We started talking and I thought she might want to come on my blog to do a guest post. Here is a little more about Paige:

Series books are pretty popular these days. For readers, the reason is a simple one. If you read the first book and loved it, you get to continue the journey with the characters for one or two more books! What can be better than that?
But is it as beneficial to the writer? The answer: It depends.

There’s an obvious benefit for any writer to create a series of books. Get your readers to buy the first book, they’ll also buy book two, and book three. Or at least that’s the plan. But the reader has to like the first book enough to invest themselves in buying the rest of the series. And even if they do like the first book, that’s no guarantee that they’ll go on to finish the series. In fact, I’ll even admit to that I’ve read quite a few #1 books in a series that I did enjoy, but just don’t quite have the motivation to move onto book #2. I’m not even sure why, exactly, except I guess they didn’t capture me that much. And that’s the double-edged sword of writing a series. Because you better make sure your readers love book one or they’re not buying book two, let alone book three, which means you’re wasting months, possibly years of your time (depending on how quickly you write and publish) writing books that nobody’s ever going to read. And if you’re publishing them yourself, that’s also money thrown out the window. Depending on how much you spend, that’s upwards of $1500! If you have a traditional deal, then you better watch out because you may not see the portion of advances for book two and three if your publisher decides to drop you due to poor performance. Yikes!

So, what can a writer do about this? Not much except write a darn good book and work your tail off.

You might even be asking right now why in the world an author would want to risk that by writing a series in the first place. I suppose that’s a good question. I guess, like everything else in life, it all comes down to taking risks and having faith. That’s what I have, and that’s why I chose to write a series—that and I wrote a darn good book ;).
